Sri Lankan domestic helpers

Sri Lankan domestic helpers form a small community in Hong Kong. Candidates usually speak Sinhala or Tamil, and many also speak English, especially those who have worked abroad before — a large share of Sri Lankan domestic workers have experience in the Middle East. Typical experience covers housework, cooking and caring for children or older people, but it differs widely between candidates, so the work history in each profile is the best guide.

Sri Lankans going abroad for work generally need to register with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE), and the documents required can change. A helper hired from Sri Lanka therefore needs home-country clearance in addition to the Hong Kong visa, while a helper who has finished a contract in Hong Kong can usually move faster. Hong Kong treats every foreign domestic helper the same way under the law. A Sri Lankan helper signs the Standard Employment Contract (ID 407) and is entitled to the Minimum Allowable Wage of HK$5,220 a month for contracts signed on or after 3 October 2026, free food or a food allowance of at least HK$1,236, a weekly rest day and statutory holidays.
