Indonesian domestic helpers are, together with Filipino helpers, one of the two largest groups of foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong. Many speak Cantonese, often learned during pre-departure training in Indonesia or picked up on earlier contracts here, which is useful when a helper will spend her days with grandparents who speak little English. Common experience includes elderly care, childcare, household cleaning and Chinese home cooking.
Indonesia regulates overseas placement closely. A first-time hire from Indonesia normally goes through a licensed placement agency, and the employment contract is handled with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Hong Kong as well as the Immigration Department. Indonesia's migrant-worker authority has been reorganised in recent years and is now a ministry (often referred to as KP2MI), and its fee and document rules are revised from time to time, so check the current requirements before you budget. A helper who has finished a contract in Hong Kong can often start sooner than one hired from overseas.
Hong Kong law does not distinguish by nationality. An Indonesian helper is covered by the same Standard Employment Contract (ID 407), the same Minimum Allowable Wage of HK$5,220 a month for contracts signed from 3 October 2026, the same minimum food allowance of HK$1,236, a weekly rest day and statutory holidays. On HelperDoc you can browse reviewed Indonesian helper profiles free whenever they are listed, filter by experience, contract status and available-from date, and message candidates. Our licensed Hong Kong office can then guide you through the consulate and visa steps.
Many do — Cantonese is often taught in pre-departure training, and helpers who have worked in Hong Kong before usually improve on the job. Ability varies from person to person, so check the language section of each profile and talk to the candidate before you decide.
The same as for every foreign domestic helper in Hong Kong: at least HK$5,220 a month for contracts signed on or after 3 October 2026 (contracts at HK$5,100 signed on or before 2 October 2026 are still accepted if submitted to the Immigration Department by 30 October 2026), plus free food or a food allowance of at least HK$1,236 a month.
The Hong Kong side (contract ID 407 and the Immigration Department visa) is the same. The home-country side differs: Indonesian hires involve the Indonesian Consulate in Hong Kong and Indonesia's placement rules rather than the Philippine MWO and DMW. Our licensed office can confirm the current steps for your case.
